Description:Located within Shenzhen’s burgeoning NanShan Dashahe Innovation Corridor, the NFU Technology Park provides an enhanced environment and platform for technological innovation and discovery. Bordering Shenzhen University’s new campus, the 628,000 sm project comprises IT incubator space, R&amp;D office, medical instruments development, and entrepreneurship services on a 15.2 hectare site. The architectural design approach acknowledges nature as an invaluable resource, a repository of knowledge, and a source of inspiration. The urban design strategy preserves natural site features, notably an ancient burial mound hill and an existing military boundary, while introducing a central landscape public realm. The integrated design strategy respects the site’s existing natural topography and is organized along the framework of a city – comprised of various programmatic ‘districts’ framing a central green space. Four major ‘districts’ are comprised of the following and directly reflect their specific programmatic functions: ‘District of Inspiration’ – Entrepreneurship Incubator Center ‘District of Investigation’ – Medical Instruments &amp; Meters ‘District of Knowledge’ – Entrepreneurship &amp; District Service Center ‘District of Realization’ – Outsourcing Services Underlying the conceptual design is an acknowledgement that more often, new scientific and technological endeavors seek inspiration and answers directly from nature. Yuhai F4 Villa&nbsp; &nbsp; Zhonghanyuan, Xunliao Bay, China &nbsp; 2018-2019 Client: Private, name withheld upon request Project Data: 922 sm interior design scope Seaside residential villa – 3 levels with basement Project Description: Situated within an exclusive, seaside residential villa development alongside beautiful Xunliao Bay, the Yuhai F4 villa upgrades and expands a prototype villa already under construction.&nbsp; The project scope consists of modifying the existing 3 story villa layout to improve functional and spatial qualities, and to provide a living space conducive to the family’s lifestyle.&nbsp; Intended to be utilized year round, the villa is designed for relaxation and entertainment.&nbsp; It easily functions as a private retreat for an individual or couple, seamlessly accommodates the immediate family, and is flexible to host larger groups of acquaintances. Conformance with the project’s masterplan necessitated that any additions or modifications to the villa’s massing and form could not be visible from the street.&nbsp; The design minimizes modifications to the villa’s structural design, with the new above ground expansion being structurally independent of the existing villa structure.&nbsp; The most significant intervention is not visible since it occurs discretely below grade. A new basement level is designed outside of the existing villa’s footprint, thereby having no impact on the existing foundation system. The design concept promotes an open living environment with the main public spaces promoting interior/exterior relationships which can seamlessly overlap when seasonal weather allows.&nbsp; While promoting spatial flow and circulation ease, the interior design also accommodates private zones separated by decorative screens or operable panels. This rapidly developing Urban Corridor presents an opportunity to develop an urban residential typology rare to Phoenix, which maintains an overreliance upon the automobile. The project takes advantage of its strategic urban position, as new projects develop along a new light-rail line, and the location’s proximity to downtown. The seven story building occupies a mid-block position, but maintains pedestrian frontage on two east/west streets. A pedestrian friendly, street level podium conceals parking behind a combination of commercial space and live/work dwelling units. Set above the podium level, a combination of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom condominium units feature spacious plans, tall ceilings and extensive exterior terraces. The terraces serve several purposes – integrated with a deep brise soleil, their distinct geometry enhances the architectural expression, and they offer generous exterior space while providing solar shading necessary for Phoenix’s extreme summer conditions. Topping the building are luxury penthouse units, featuring extensive glazing, large terraces and unique floor plans which take advantage of downtown views to the south and views of Camelback Mountain to the north. The design concept promotes a vibrant living community with amenity spaces grouped around an exterior courtyard, set above the podium. A cantilevered pool is asymmetrically positioned to balance the indigenously landscaped central garden. Los Angeles, USA 2017-2019 Client: Private, name withheld upon request Project Data: Hillside site area – 0.155 acres Private residence, 2266 sf building area Project Description:Situated amongst the hills of Montecito Heights - a community northeast of downtown Los Angeles, a steeply sloping site presented a unique design challenge and opportunity. In greater Los Angeles, hillside residential design and construction is stringently regulated through various hillside ordinances, building codes, and neighborhood approvals. Limitations are placed upon allowable maximum building area in direct relationship to the site’s slope, as calculated through a rigorous slope band analysis. Additionally, height restrictions, building volume &amp; height envelopes, site setbacks, soil conditions, seismic provisions, site retention &amp; drainage, and landscaping regulations present numerous design influences and challenges. The design deftly resolves these various issues and provides a wonderful living environment taking advantage of site, climate and views. While a single story volume discreetly addresses the street, the three level house cascades down the narrow hillside site opening up to southern exposure and 270 degree views. Generous living/entertaining spaces and terraces promote an open living environment, creating a seamless relationship between interior and exterior space, and taking advantage of LA’s desirable climate. Transitioning from the opaque exterior and private entrance, one enters into a daylight filled, generously glazed pavilion surrounded by an extensive rooftop terrace. The circulation sequence continues with an open stair which directly follows the adjacent site slope, leading to the main living &amp; dining level. The lowest level becomes a more private zone accommodating three bedrooms. Responding to the site’s inherent cross slope, a series of cascading retention walls negotiate the site contours while providing planting beds for indigenous landscaping. Architecturally, the design concept integrates functional and spatial qualities to provide a living environment conducive to the client’s lifestyle. Particular attention is given to material and finish selection, with an emphasis on natural, sustainable materials, timeless elegance and functional simplicity. Tower – 45,000 sm, 110 meter Project Description: Located within Shenzhen’s burgeoning NanShan Dashahe Innovation Corridor, the NFU Technology Park provides an enhanced environment and platform for technological innovation and discovery.&nbsp; Bordering Shenzhen University’s new campus, the 628,000 sm project comprises IT incubator space, R&amp;D office, medical instruments development, and entrepreneurship services on a 15.2 hectare site. &nbsp; Zone B functions as the Entrepreneurship Incubator Center and is symbolically considered the ‘District of Inspiration’, encouraging discovery and innovation for IT professionals, scientists, entrepreneurs and visionaries.&nbsp; It provides buildings and spaces which fulfill the goal of integrating R&amp;D, manufacturing and education platforms.&nbsp; B1 Tower is an architecturally expressive structure, deemed the ‘Tower of Inspiration’, and occupies a pivotal position within the Technology Park.&nbsp; It serves as a focal point which visually defines a site axis extending from the high point of a burial mound hilltop, to the eastern tip of the site. The Tower design solution responds to site and functional influences, creating a distinct skyline profile and distinct focal point.&nbsp; A beautifully sculpted tower shape responds directly to the urban context, and its geometry responds harmoniously with surrounding buildings.&nbsp; While architecturally responsive to context, the tower shape and floor plan is derived from the goal of providing the highest quality of work space. cinemas &amp; penthouse club Project Description:Located south of the Pearl River waterway and 3 kilometers southeast of the Guangzhou Tianhe CBD, the 10,258 sm site is bounded by four new roadways located within the new master plan development of the northeast zone of Pazhou Island. An area of 10.4 square kilometers is divided into four districts, with the site located in the district planned for conference and exhibition, e-commerce, office, hotel and commercial shopping features. The AH04241 site has a fixed geometry and proposed general massing based upon urban planning guidelines and conditions. The street bounding the western edge of the site is a wide, landscaped roadway connecting the Pearl River and new riverbank park with the central, east-west landscaped canal promenade, and then extending further to a grouping of super-tall buildings central to the development. An important design "line of influence" on the site is the angle of Pearl River to the north, and also the transitional angle of the canal immediately south of the site. Acknowledgement of Guangzhou's architectural heritage is a key component of the urban design guidelines - specifically the arcade type buildings which represent a unique aspect of this architectural heritage. Creating a strong visual identity through a coherent urban design, the site planning concept establishes linkages with the surrounding context and site geometry, while developing spatial relationships to create meaningful landscaped public and urban space. Key design considerations are the promotion of a strong visual identity for the tower, views to and from the site, integration with the existing circulation systems, and promoting environmentally responsive solutions. An architecturally expressive tower with useable floor levels reaching 150 meters, rises an additional 22.5 meters above the roof level to become a focal point of the development - an iconic visual "marker" for the area. The tower's efficient floor plan is defined and shaped by the site and local context geometry, responding to views to and from the site, and acknowledging the urban design situation. Situated 45 kilometers northwest of Danzhou, the series of artificial islands lie between Danzhou Bay and Yangpu Bay.&nbsp; The central island - Ocean Flower Island, is conceptualized as a Chinese peony flower with five main petals and a center, and with each zone featuring unique functions and attractions. Zone D is master planned to feature resort villa hotels and high-rise residential towers.&nbsp; Concept facade designs were developed to study new design ideas easily adapted to the Client’s standard floor plans, for towers ranging in height from 100 - 120 meters. A variety of architectural expressions were developed, some inspired by the flowing motion of the sea and embracing tropical breezes, thus being at harmony with the tropical setting.&nbsp; Others are inspired by the petals of the Chinese peony, with an organic facade treatment and expressive nature.&nbsp; Deep and curvilinear profiled balconies provide residents generous opportunities to enjoy the tropical climate and take in the incredible sea views of Ocean Flower Island.&nbsp; Varied geometries and massing arrangements of balconies cast interesting and changing plays of light and crisp China 2015 Client: Hengbang Real Estate Group Project Data: 8073 sm site area, 62,162 sm building area&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Mixed-use office and commercial buildingn Project Description:Located north of Shenzhen Bay and 7 kilometers northwest of the Shenzhen CBD, the corner site represents a strategic urban position similar to a hinge or pivot, since the location is a transition point from the Futian district on the east, to the Nanshan district on the west. It is a significant node as one travels north along QiaoXiang Dong Road from Shenzhen Bay, through the OCT and Zhuzilin areas, and the mountains north of QiaoXiang Road. This pivotal site has a unique geometry shaped by the existing urban conditions, essentially forming a parallelogram based upon the angles of the surrounding roadways. An important "line of influence" on the site is the angle of the roadway west of QiaoXiang Dong Lu. The intersection of the roadway angles is significant since it represents the transition between Futian District and Nanshan District, which is acknowledged through a responsive building and site design geometry. The tower and podium design solution responds to these influences by creating distinct and inviting pedestrian linkages, and to visually establish its pivotal urban location. A beautifully sculpted tower shape responds directly to the urban context and geometry, and overcomes the setback and envelope restrictions. A desired result of the tower's form is the preservation and enhancement of the view corridor towards the Garden Expo Pagoda Tower when traveling east along QiaoXiang Lu. While architecturally responsive to context, the tower shape and floor plan is also derived from the goal of providing the highest quality Class A office space. A highly efficient floor plan seamlessly integrates unique office environment amenities and advantageous view opportunities. The design concept promotes a vibrant development offering 62,162 m2 of high quality, Class A office space, entrepreneurship opportunities, and supporting commercial space. An architecturally expressive tower rising 153 meters is the focal of the development, and will be an iconic visual "marker" for the area. The tower's floor plan is a defined and shaped by the site and local context geometry, responding to views to and from the site, and acknowledging its pivotal urban design situation. The energy efficient façade treatment echoes the innovative function of the building, with an elegant mixture of a ventilated façade, screen printed glass, stainless steel spandrel accents, and a &nbsp; Concept hotel designs for various sized plots and locations Project Description: Located along Hainan Island’s spectacular northwest coast, Ocean Flower Island is a visionary artificial island development envisioned as a premier international destination showcasing a unique, one-of-a-kind mix of resort, residential, and leisure functions. &nbsp;Situated 45 kilometers northwest of Danzhou, the series of artificial islands lie between Danzhou Bay and Yangpu Bay.&nbsp; The central island - Ocean Flower Island, is conceptualized as a Chinese peony flower with five main petals and a center, and with each zone featuring unique functions and attractions. Zone B is Ocean Flower’s largest zone and contains premiere resort hotels envisioned as signature, modern architectural designs with highly innovative layouts and evocative forms.&nbsp; While addressing no specific hospitality program, the concept studies were intended to develop multiple design ideas and schemes for four plots, with buildings ranging in height from 60 to 120 meters.&nbsp; The client’s expressed requirements were for iconic hotel designs whose forms were organic and expressive in nature, and exuded an innovative and modern architectural design approach.
